Gomburza Marker

This squat whitewashed obelisk marks the spot where three Filipino secular priests – Jose Burgos, Mariano Gomez, and Jacinto Zamora, collectively known as GOMBURZA were executed by garrote on charges of subversion due to their alleged involvement in the 1872 Cavite mutiny. They were executed by strangulation – by a vile device consisting of an iron collar which the executioner tightened slowly until the martyrs met death on February 17, 1872. Their remains were buried at Paco Park. Rizal’s novel – “El Filibusterismo” – was dedicated to the three martyrs.
