22 APRIL 2022 – Today is the 200th anniversary of the inauguration of the Paco Cemetery or the Cementerio General de Dilao, now known as Paco Park. It was built during the first part of the 19th century on a piece of land that was bought from Juan Blanco Bermudez; and was designed by the Maestro de Obras, Don Nicolas Ruiz.
This also became the burial ground of our heroes: Dr. Jose Rizal and the martyr priests namely, Mariano Gomez, Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora (collectively known as GomBurZa).
In 1963, Ildefonso P. Santos Jr., an architect who later became a National Artist for Architecture (2006) was entrusted to lead the rehabilitation and beautification of the Cementerio General. Three years later, it was recognized as a National Park (1966).
In 2015, the National Museum of the Philippines declared Cementerio Municipal de Manila y Capilla de San Pancracio as a National Cultural Treasure.
On this day, we remember the historical events and memories which took place within the walls of Paco Park, our sanctuary for Philippine history and heritage.
